Transformational Creatures: The Sacred Snake

snake

Snakes are very interesting and sacred beings. Snakes can represent healing, transformation, primal energy, and spiritual guidance. They shed their skin and come into the new so they are often seen as symbols of transformation. The snake is a power animal and it can show up at a time when increased energy is manifesting. The snake moves and travels with its body very close to the earth. It is connected with the Earth’s energy and life force. The snake is a symbol of healing so it should be taken into consideration how you are using your energy to heal yourself or others. Your energy should be cultivated through nature and its resources. In ancient tales and traditions, snakes are seen as healers.

In Greek mythology, Asclepius is known as the god of medicine. He is a distinguished healer that is known to be featured with two snakes climbing up a rod. This symbol today is known as Caduceus. It is said that a snake licked the ears of Asclepius to return his kindness and filled him with knowledge of ancient healing wisdom.  It was believed that his snake companions would slither across the bodies of those who were sick and lick them back to good health while they were sleeping. Greek mythology held that people could gain second sight or hearing when licked by the snake.

caduceus_1924-svgWhile snakes can be seen as medicine and healers, they also have the ability to poison. They are similar to fungi in a sense that they contain chemicals that can heal, kill, or expand consciousness, possibly containing the elixir of life. Snakes are seen as the wisest when it comes to herbal knowledge.

Snakes are also seen as a dual expression of good and evil. The Hopi people are known to have a snake dance to ensure that rain will fall on their crops and ensure a good season. It is known to incorporate the Snake Youth (which is the sky spirit) and the Snake Girl (the underworld spirit) to renew fertility in nature. Live snakes were used in the dance and then were thrown into the fields for a good growing season. It is a prayer to the spirits of the sky for rainfall, thunder and lightning. In Hinduism, Kundalini is the power of pure desire and mother energy, it is a coiled serpent.

Just like snakes themselves, there is endless knowledge of the sacred meaning of the snake. If you happen to come across one, think about where you are in your life and what you are putting your energy into. The snake is full of wisdom and we can definitely learn a thing or two from these spiritual creatures.

The Dance of the Butterfly: Transformational Creatures

Painting by Ellie Paisley  http://www.ElliePaisley.com

Nature is a school and the greatest teachers are the animals that live within it. Whether these creatures are seen as spiritual guides, totems, or archetypal symbols, there is no denying their teachings that can be passed on to those willing to learn. Once you start to pay attention to what nature is trying to say, the lessons are endless. A creature I have learned so much from is the butterfly.

Butterflies are beautiful and majestic creatures that symbolize the joy and movement from one phase of life to the next. It is the only living organism that can change its entire genetic structure and DNA by evolving from caterpillar to butterfly.  The butterfly shows the beauty, color and wonder that comes with change. It has taught me that even though I cannot fly, I can choose not to be stuck in a place that is too comfortable or uncomfortable.

Metamorphosis is magical. The butterfly goes through 4 stages of transformation from egg to larvae, cocoon to butterfly.  In order to grow, we must evolve and come into a new form that can only guide us to grow in a bright and colorful way. We can only flourish in our creativity when the time is right and when we are willing to break out of our shell. The butterfly is a symbol that change should be handled lightly and it should not being taken so seriously. The butterfly is attracted to the light naturally, which shows purity.

The myth and folklore associated with the butterfly is deeply rooted. In Mexican culture, butterflies are often associated with the Day of the Dead, which is a celebration of loved ones that have passed on. Butterflies symbolize the spirits of their loved ones returning.

The butterfly was very important to Ancient Mexican culture. They had an entire palace dedicated to these creatures called “The Palace of the Mariposa” at Teotihuacan. Teotihuacan is located just outside of Mexico City and it is considered to be the oldest metropolis in Mexican history.

In ancient Greek culture, Aristotle gave the name psyche for the butterfly meaning “soul”. The Greek God Eros’ human lover was named Psyche. She was seen as a personification of the human soul, much like the butterfly.

The Native American Cherokee tribe refers to it as “Butterfly Medicine”. The butterfly allows the opportunity to look beyond the physical world into the spiritual realm. The butterfly shows up to tell you that it is time to take the next step in your transformation for your greatest good. If the butterfly crosses your path, you are ready to change in a big way.

The butterfly is a beautiful symbol of change and light that will continue to teach us all. Change is beautiful, let’s celebrate it with joy and vivid color.

Let’s Get Lucid: Dreaming Herbs & More- Herbalisting

gate

Plants are spiritual tools that speak a language of their own. Once we tap into the power of the plant we can use it to enhance our energy, spirit and wisdom. Dreams are a way in which we can get in touch with our inner realm and spiritual being. When we are conscious and aware of what we are dreaming, we have the ability to control what we do in our dreams. The concept of this type of control and awareness while sleeping is known as, lucid dreaming.

There are ways in which we can enhance our lucid dreaming experience by using herbs, flower essences and stones. Not only do these aid our dreaming experience, they also help in setting intention for our dreams. Mugwort, is known for protection and it’s involvement in lucid dreaming experiences. It is a cooling herb that is connected to the moon. Mugwort is very prominent in cities and suburbs, being known as a traveler’s herb, it protects those in transit. It’s scientific name “Artemisia vulgaris” shows connection to Artemis, the moon goddess. Whether the herb is enjoyed as a tea, tincture, or just simply under your pillow at night, Mugwort can really bring out the lucid dreaming experience.

Now let’s talk about Skullcap. Skullcap repairs and restores nerves so it is good for conditions like anxiety and depression. It can bring you into a deep sleep and promote positive and vivid dreams.

Blue Lotus is a sacred symbol as well as a sedative herb. It is known to put you in deep connection with your intuition as well as your 3rd eye and crown chakra. It is receptive to creativity and should be used in moderation and with intention.

St. John’s Wort flower essence is known for grounding and bringing in light. Flower essences are good for those who may have interactions with plants due to medical reasons, because the essence is the vibrational energy of the plant. They bring about emotional balance, and St. John’s Wort flower essence is also a good nightmare remedy.

Crystal and gem energies are powerful as well. Amethyst, is a known protector and dreaming stone. It purifies space and is great for receiving spiritual messages. This stone is known to hold a lot of energy so cleansing it with sage, mugwort or water should be taken into consideration.

Labradorite, is a great stone for pulling out energy and mystical wonder. It is a protector stone as well as one for the inner eye and adventure. It brings in positive light and is a great stone for traveling and exploring. The glimmer of a rainbow the stone has, is a great example of the magic it possesses.

While all these plants and stones are mere guides/ suggestions for lucid dreaming, it should be taken into consideration that some of these may not be the right fit for you. It is important to understand that like people, all of these natural tools have personalities in them. Your personality may not gel with theirs so it is important to know if these are the right fit for you. Use your best judgement and ask a professional before you decide to try anything you are unsure of.

screenshot_2016-08-01-16-30-22-1.png

Qualities that are warming, fiery, passionate and hardworking. The personality of a plant can really say a lot, and ginger deserves to be known as a “power root”. She draws in adventures and new experiences while boosting sensuality, sexuality and confidence. Ginger is known bring about abundance and it should be consumed in that manner as well.

So what is it about Ginger that makes it so powerful? It has been used in cultures around the globe for a multitude of reasons. Traditional Chinese pharmacopeias suggest that long term use can put a person in contact with spiritual advantages. When it comes to the ancient Ayurvedic health system in India, ginger is known as “universal medicine”. Ginger, also known as Zingiber Officinale, can be used to treat a number of ailments and symptoms. Some treatments include: headaches, digestive issues, nausea, morning sickness, motion sickness, cancer and tumor growth, loss of appetite, cramps, toothaches, cough, cold, chills, the flu, poor circulation, inflammation, high blood pressure, and cholic.

Gingerol, or [6]-gingerol, is the main active ingredient in fresh ginger. Gingerol is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory as well as, a cancer fighting compound. Research has shown ginger can stop the growth of tumors and balance the effects of chemotherapy on the body.

Ginger inhibits inflammatory feedback in the brain which could improve brain function and protect against Alzheimer’s. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress can make the aging process worse, so ginger helps to decrease both of those and promote healthy aging.

Ginger is also known as an aphrodisiac and reproductive tonic. Due to the fact that ginger increases blood flow, it is a warming and stimulating root. It brings about an immediate and warming sensation to the body which increases sexual stimulation and arousal.

There’s good reason to be passionate about Ginger. Just remember, like people, plants have varying personalities. Some are stronger than others and some may not gel with your personality. So before you make any commitments, find out if ginger is the right fit for you. Not everyone can handle her fire and strength.

The Movement Behind the Movement- A Hike For Our Lives

11248079_10206780671621614_6779116824164358903_n

Everyone has a story to share and telling it can truly change the world in big ways. One woman encourages people everywhere to tell their stories. Her story is about her experience with sexual assault.

Kaiha Bertollini will begin “A Hike for Our Lives” starting from Maine and ending in Georgia on the Appalachian Trail. She will be completing this hike by herself in less than 90 days. Physical activity can be a form of healing from trauma and her perseverance will serve her well on the trail. Her vision is to change the way our society looks at survivors of sexual violence. She understands that what she is doing is much bigger than herself as an individual. This woman is determined to give everything she has to this project and give it her best shot. Kaiha shares some words of wisdom that everyone can learn a lesson from. “The only limitations are the one’s inside your mind, and when you smash them there is no limit to what you can do,” Kaiha stated prior to leaving for her journey.

By completing this personal journey, Kaiha hopes to inspire those who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to speak out and share their stories. This project creates a safe space for people everywhere to come out and share their struggle with PTSD and trauma from sexual violence. Sharing can be uncomfortable, but suffering in silence can be equally  as unbearable. Kaiha shares her story not only because she wants to be heard, but because she wants to encourage other people to share too. Kaiha explains the feelings that go along with telling her story, “It’s uncomfortable to talk about (sexual violence), but it is uncomfortable to be robbed of your connection with the world.,”.

Share your story and speak out here –> http://www.hikeforourlives.org/#!share-a-story/cl744

Rape culture is a real issue, and how our society handles survivors of assault is appalling. It will take everyone coming together to address the issue in a civil manner. With civility, comes awareness, but most of all, it requires patience. Kaiha is planting a seed to help grow an idea into a solution that is much bigger than any individual. We are here to connect, to communicate, to love and to be loved. The world and the people in it have been divided for so long that when we try to connect it can be difficult. Everyone is invited to come together and celebrate “A Hike for Our Lives”.

Feel free to donate to a cause that is truly remarkable and inspiring

Become a part of the solution. Be the movement behind the movement.

The Power of the Medicine Bag

wp-image-1414225074jpg.jpg

Always keep your medicine close to your heart. The medicine bag is a traditional necklace pouch that originated from the Native American people. It is mostly to maintain personal harmony with oneself and the physical, spiritual and supernatural world. The pouch, made usually of leather, contains a small sentiment from the plant, animal, mineral and man-made world. Each of these sentiments are of personal value.

I was recently gifted my very own medicine bag. As of right now I have found it to be a very spiritual piece that I wear and carry with me everywhere I go. I hold my medicine very close to me because it is of great importance in my life. It is an aspect of me that I hold dear. I feel very in touch with my own personal healing journey. We are all healers and I find it is my job to encourage people to heal themselves. My favorite medium is plant and herbal healing. I will carry this pouch with me everywhere I go because it symbolizes my personal journey that I am currently on with herbal medicine.

Scared Tea Time

Everyday I look forward to drinking a nice cup of tea! Sipping on any tea of your choosing can be grounding, centering and enjoyable. You can share your tea time with good friends and family or just enjoy the comfort of being by yourself. I love to mix and blend my own teas out of fresh herbs, roots or flowers. On of my absolute favorites is ginger root tea. Not only is it tasty, but it is healthy and natural. Ginger is great for digestion, headaches and chewing on the root itself can be good for tooth pain! Turmeric root is also a part of the tea and it is known to reduce inflammation and prevent diseases. It is synergistically combined with black pepper so your body can absorb it better. Check 0ut how to make your own!
